Falcons, Douglas agree to extension

Updated Mar 13, 2012 8:59 PM ET

Two offensive players are returning to the Atlanta Falcons.

A source told FOXSports.com that wide receiver Harry Douglas had agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension. Financial details weren’t immediately available.

Backup quarterback Chris Redman also signed a one-year deal, a source said. Financial details weren’t immediately available.

Paired with starters Roddy White and Julio Jones, Douglas posted career highs in catches (39) and receiving yards (498) in 2011 as Atlanta’s third wideout. Douglas, 27, also made four starts.

As a third-round pick in 2008, Douglas was selected in the same draft class as quarterback Matt Ryan. Douglas missed the 2009 season with a knee injury but has played in every Falcons game the past two seasons.

Redman has served as Atlanta’s backup passer since the Falcons drafted Ryan with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 draft. Redman, 34, appeared in five games last season, completing 18 of 28 passes for 188 yards with one interception.

Atlanta Falcons' general manager loves ex-Tide…

INDIANAPOLIS – A year ago, the Atlanta Falcons caused a stir when they traded up with the Cleveland Browns and then used the No. 6 pick in the first round to select former Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff has no regrets. Jones started 13 games and caught 54 passes for 959 yards. He led all NFL rookies in touchdowns, making eight TD catches.

“He missed three games with an injury,” Dimitroff noted. “He made an impact on our football team that we enjoyed at so many levels. The fan base obviously enjoyed watching him. He’s a guy that you’re always on the edge of your seat waiting to watch.

Jones was a perfect complement to wide receiver Roddy White, a former UAB standout, and tight end Tony Gonzalez, Dimitroff said.

“And he worked with Matt Ryan very well,” Dimitroff said of the Falcons’ quarterback. “So we have a nice expectation for Julio in the future.”

Jones is very passionate about football, Dimitroff said.

“He works very hard athletically,” Dimitroff said. “To me, he’s right up there with the top ones in the league, and now going into the offseason and having the ability to work with Matt Ryan and work on the timing in the game, which is very, very important in this game, it will help him significantly.”

That’s all the news for today.

Atlanta Falcons Roddy White Reaches Agreement in…

(TMZ) Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is definitely NOT dropping the ball in his paternity case — in fact, the Pro Bowler says he’s willing to pay whatever it takes to support his baby boy.

TMZ broke the story … White’s baby mama Stacey Hott told the judge she was expecting a “generous” amount of child support because Roddy makes a FORTUNE as one of the top receivers in the NFL.

And according to court docs filed in Georgia and obtained by TMZ … her wish came true — because Roddy agreed to fork over $3,200 per month in child support.

Plus, Roddy promised to take out a MASSIVE life insurance policy on himself, with his son as the beneficiary … just in case. And to top it off, Roddy also agreed to cover the bill for Hott’s lawyers.

A judge signed off on the agreement this week … thus ending what seems to be the most amicable child support dispute involving an NFL player … maybe ever. more on this story

Atlanta Falcons’ Roddy White Admits Fathering Baby

(TMZ) Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is stepping up to the plate in his paternity case and admitting he IS the father of a 5-month-old baby boy — but there’s a catch … TMZ has learned.

White filed legal documents in Georgia earlier this month … acknowledging he DID father a child with a Georgia banker named Stacey Hott … and he’s willing to accept responsibility.

But according to the docs, White isn’t ready to fork over child support just yet — despite Hott’s claim that he’s capable of providing a “generous” amount due to his massive NFL salary.

Unless the two can strike a settlement quickly, a judge will get to decide Roddy’s payments.

Calls to Roddy’s people have not been returned. more on this story

NFL playoffs: Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants

Sunday, 1 p.m., MetLife Stadium, WTTG-5

Falcons 10-6, Giants 9-7

How the Falcons can win… The Falcons are a relatively balanced team, at least by the standards of some of this year’s top playoff contenders. They ranked 10th in the league in total offense and 12th in total defense during the regular season. The Atlanta defense ranked sixth against the run, and seems likely to shut down a Giants’ running game, which struggled all year. The Falcons rediscovered RB Michael Turner when he ran for 172 yards Sunday, and QB Matt Ryan has the receivers–in WRs Roddy White and Julio Jones and TE Tony Gonzalez—to exploit the Giants’ 29th-ranked pass defense.

How the Giants can win… The Giants enter the playoffs feeling good about themselves after beating the Jets and Cowboys on the final two weekends of the regular season to win the NFC East. They get to play at MetLife Stadium again, and they’re talking about re-creating the magic of their postseason run to a Super Bowl title after the 2007 season. QB Eli Manning has been one of the league’s most dependable players all season, leading the Giants to five victories with fourth-quarter comebacks. The defense played well against the Cowboys, sacking QB Tony Romo six times. DE Jason Pierre-Paul has become the most disruptive of the Giants’ pass rushers; he had 16-1/2 sacks during the regular season.

Atlanta Beats Tennessee 23-17

By: SportsDirect

Matt Ryan threw for 316 yards and a touchdown to lead the Atlanta Falcons to a 23-17 victory over the visiting Tennessee Titans on Sunday.Michael Turner rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown as Atlanta (6-4) won for the fourth time in five games to move within a game of NFC South leader New Orleans.Things got interesting after Tennessee lost quarterback Matt Hasselbeck with an elbow injury in the third quarter.Trailing 23-3, rookie Jake Locker replaced Hasselbeck and connected with Nate Washington for a 40-yard touchdown on his third attempt of the game.Locker then threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Washington with 3:06 remaining to cut the deficit to 23-17, but the Falcons (6-4) were able to run out the clock.Locker ended up 9 for 19 for 140 yards for the Titans (5-5).Playing without deep threat rookie receiver Julio Jones (hamstring), Atlanta turned to veteran Roddy White, who caught seven passes for 147 yards.Atlanta scored on its first possession of the game and never trailed as Ryan connected with tight end Tony Gonzalez on a 17-yard scoring pass. The Falcons then made it 13-0 on a pair of field goals by Matt Bryant, the first of which came on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.A week ago, Falcons coach Mike Smith opted to try for a first down at his own 29-yard-line on fourth-and-1 in overtime. That led to a Saints game-winning field goal. The Falcons scored on a lightning-quick drive to start the second half capped by Turner’s 4-yard touchdown run.

Julio Jones Fantasy Recap: Atlanta Falcons Rookie…

Read More: Roddy White (WR – ATL), Julio Jones (WR – ATL), Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons received a huge jolt of energy from rookie wide receiver Julio Jones as he caught three passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons 31-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Jones had missed several weeks with a hamstring strain but appears to be over it. He hauled in a 50-yard touchdown reception and followed that up with an 80-yard pass from Matt Ryan.

Although Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez are excellent weapons for Matt Ryan, Julio Jones brings another level of explosiveness to the Falcons offense. The Falcons even mixed him in on the rushing attack with some reverses that netted 33 yards.

The Falcons begin a three game homestand that features games against New Orleans, Tennessee and Minnesota. The Saints can give up some big passing totals on the road, so this could be a chance for another big game from Julio Jones. Roddy White will be in the mix plenty, but look for the Falcons to stretch the field a bit with Jones.

Colts-Falcons in-game analysis

(Today’s blog provides press-box observations on the Colts-Atlanta Falcons game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Questions can be submitted via Twitter @pwilson24 or by email at phillip.wilson@indystar.com. Comments can be posted at the end of this thread. A Colts chat on Coveritlive.com will be at 8 p.m. Monday.)

THIRD QUARTER

2:50 — Nobody bothers to cover TE Tony Gonzalez on third-down pass from the 1. Too easy. TD. FALCONS 28, COLTS 7.

4:51 — Third-down pass to WR Roddy White, easy pitch-and-catch against a soft zone, gain of 10 to the Colts 2.

6:53 — Another throw to the soon-to-be Hall of Famer, Gonzalez grabs pass outside for 11-yard gain and first down at the Colts 13.

7:35 — As the Colts languish, the Miami Dolphins are ahead 28-3 at Kansas City. It would appear the Colts will finish this day as the NFL’s last winless team.

8:49 — Gonzalez with 20-yard catch to the Colts 40.

10:22 — Colts go three-and-out. Ho-hum. Punt. Falcons will start at their 27.

11:40 — LB Philip Wheeler blitzes on third-and-2 and gets the sack. Falcons punt.

14:29 — After another Colts kickoff for a touchback, RB Michael Turner opens the second half with a 5-yard run.

SECOND QUARTER

0:00 — Half ends on 55-yard punt out of bounds. FALCONS 21, COLTS 7.

0:10 — Falcons throw another incomplete pass on third down. Have to punt.

0:15 — Colts CB Jerraud Powers almost has second INT. Thrown right to him, but he can’t hang onto the high pass.

0:28 — Falcons get ball back at their 40. Not much time to do anything.

1:08 — Colts throw another WR bubble screen on third down. Short of sticks. Colts have to punt from their end zone.

1:25 — Pierre Garcon should have fair caught the punt at the 10, but let’s it bounce and get downed in deep. One rush later, Colts are backed up to their 1.

2:00 — A holding penalty helps back the Falcons up to third-and-24 at the two-minute warning.

3:42 — WR Roddy White hauls in 33-yard pass to the Colts 46 as CB Kevin Thomas and S David Caldwell are in the area but can’t stop the big play.

3:56 — Falcons get three guys into the backfield as QB Curtis Painter goes down. Third-down sack loses 12 yards. Colts punt.

4:38 — Austin Collie runs away from coverage on crossing route for 16-yard catch.

5:33 — Colts catch another break. TE Tony Gonzalez is open for the third-and-8 pass outside as he gets separation from LB Ernie Sims, but the Falcons target can’t hold on. Visitors punt. Colts take over at their 30.

6:44 — Falcons get back to basics and run the ball. A couple cracks at it gain a first down.

7:47 — For the first time since the second quarter against Pittsburgh in Week 3, the Colts come up with a turnover. Falcons QB Matt Ryan throws behind his WR, but directly to a diving Powers, who hops up and runs into the end zone with the INT from 6 yards out for the TD. Colts had not come up with a turnover in 23 quarters. FALCONS 21, COLTS 7.

8:35 — Colts move a little, but then stall near midfield as third-down blitz doesn’t get picked up and Painter is forced by a blitzing LB to throw incomplete. Home team punts again. After ref goofs on initial ruling, the punt is declared out of bounds at the Falcons 1. Nice job by punter Pat McAfee.

12:26 — Third-and-3 at the Falcons 20, quick slant, Julio Jones snags it and outruns everybody. Some kind of rookie talent. Although the Colts make everybody look good. Jones scores on 80-yard TD pass. FALCONS 21, COLTS 0.

13:29 — Colts have to punt again after a Painter sideline throw sails high and incomplete. Painter is 5-of-14 for 53 yards with one INT. Falcons will start at their 13.

13:48 — Deep ball to Reggie Wayne draws contact. But refs don’t call it. Say the overthrow was uncatchable. Fans boo. A colleague nails it when he observes, “Bad teams don’t get calls.” Sure didn’t last week when the Titans mugged these guys.

14:55 — Jacob Tamme wide open when he makes out cut. Painter air mails is high and wide. Incomplete.

FIRST QUARTER

0:00 — After a brief scramble, Painter hits Clark for 12-yard gain and another first down to the Colts 41. End of quarter. FALCONS 14, COLTS 0.

2:04 — Painter atones with an 11-yard strike to WR Austin Collie for a first down.

2:19 — Painter throws two passes on same play. That’s a no-no. Ball got batted back to him. Guess he didn’t know you can’t throw it again when that happens.

2:51 — Wow … WR Julio Jones is triple-covered deep but dives and appears to catch a 50-yard TD pass. Ref signals incomplete. But Falcons challenge. And they get the call reversed. Touchdown. Jones was right. He jumped off and told his sideline to challenge. Rookie was sure he got it. FALCONS 14, COLTS 0.

3:32 — Jones takes a double reverse for 14 yards to midfield. Snazzy razzle-dazzle play there. It looked as if it might gain a lot more than that.

4:05 — Turner sheds tacklers and drags S Antoine Bethea on a run for 15.

4:25 — Third-down pass sails high and through the hands of Tamme. Painter looking shaky at best so far. Colts punt again. Falcons take over at their 21.

5:40 — After a 13-yard pass to WR Roddy White for a first down, the Falcons go nowhere on three plays, two Matt Ryan passes incomplete and a run for nothing. Falcons punt.

8:05 — Former Colts CB Kelvin Hayden in the right place at the right time, comes up with the interception to kill a Colts scoring threat.

8:16 — Painter pass over the middle is behind Clark. Yes, he could have caught what amounted to a back-shoulder throw when he’s going the other direction, but it sails through incomplete. Puts Colts in a third-and-10 situation.

8:50 — Donald Brown keeps his legs moving after the initial contact, gains 2 on third-and-1 to the Falcons 33.

8:57 — Colts put Brown in the game for Delone Carter. Brown rips off a couple runs for 15 yards. Painter hits on 15-yard pass to Garcon for another first down.

11:38 — Michael Turner plows over a Colts tackler for 1-yard TD run. Didn’t get the number of the Indy guy, but no matter. He didn’t have a chance. FALCONS 7, COLTS 0.

12:41 — Backup RB Jacquizz Rodgers takes the quick pitch left for 11 yards. Almost scores. First-and-goal at the 2.

13:26 — Two Turner runs and the Falcons have a first down at the Colts 13.

14:16 — Carter runs twice, coughs it up on the second carry. Falcons recover at the 26.

14:53 — Joe Lefeged returns kick to the 19. This time, he had to bring it out. Falcons kicked it to the goal line.

Falcons Vs. Packers: Aaron Rodgers, Roddy White…

Compared to other things star Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White has said, this is pretty mild stuff. Actually, it’s so mild it would barely register no matter who said it, but here’s the quote about last year’s playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers that’s making the rounds:

We were a better team than those guys. We went out there, and we didn’t perform at our highest level.

This week, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers sort of responded to this or something like it:

Star-divide

I know some of the comments that have been made this offseason have been borderline disrespectful about what happened in the game, but basically we went down there and beat them, and they were the No. 1 seed. I’m sure they’re upset about that.

The Falcons were the No. 1 seed and had beaten the Packers in the regular season. White has reason to think Atlanta was the better team going into the postseason, but the second game itself and every week of NFL football since has proven otherwise. If the Packers want to use that quote as motivation, then all right.

It’s been a strong week for once and former Falcons saying stuff about Rodgers and company, though.

Seahawks vs. Falcons, NFL Injury Report: Roddy…

Read More: Roddy White (WR – ATL), Matt McCoy (LB – SEA), Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks will take on the Atlanta Falcons this weekend as the team looks to move to .500 for the first time this season. Both teams are facing injuries this week, though the Falcons have been struck a little bit harder on this front. Linebacker Matt McCoy is dealing with two injuries while the Falcons missed their top receiver in practice on Wednesday, according to Seattle Pi’s Chrisitan Caple.

Wide receiver Roddy White of the Falcons did not practice on Wednesday with a thigh injury. White is a central part of the Falcons pass attack and broke through last weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccanners with his biggest game of the season, racking up 140 yards on nine receptions. His status for Sunday is unclear at this point, but the Falcons will be at a disadvantage if they have to play without him.

Linebacker Matt McCoy, one of the only Seahawks to be dealing with injuries this week, is actually dealing with multiple injuries. In addition to the head injury he suffered last weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, the linebacker is also working through a shoulder injury . This season, McCoy has started only one of the team’s three games while recording 15 tackles. His status is uncertain as well at the moment.

Other Seahawks held out of practice today include safety Kam Chancellor (quadriceps) and cornerback Byron Maxwell (ankle). The Seahawks, at this point, appear to be in pretty good shape ahead of Sunday’s home game.

Falcons Vs. Bears Injury Report: Corey Peters Out…

Read More: Ray Edwards (DE – ATL), Corey Peters (DT – ATL), Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears

Expectations are fairly high for the Atlanta Falcons heading into the new 2011 season. And for good reason. One cause for concern though is the play of the front seven, a potential liability that didn’t really rear its ugly head in 2010. Speed is more important than ever on defense, but it’s hard to survive in the NFL if you don’t also have some bulk and depth in the trenches and at linebacker.

The Falcons tried to improve their defensive line in free agency by signing free agent Ray Edwards. The addition of Edwards will at least partially be reneged by the loss of DT Corey Peters for Atlanta’s Week 1 road test against the Chicago Bears. Peters, a third-round selection out of Kentucky in the 2010 Draft, suffered a knee injury during the preseason schedule. No surgery was required though, which perhaps lulled fans and scribes into thinking that he’d be just fine once Week 1 rolled around.

That’s not the case unfortunately, as Peters was officially ruled out for Sunday’s game. In his place, Jeriah Perry will get his first real shot at proving he was worthy of a first round selection in the 2009 Draft. Jerry did play in 16 games last year, but he was relegated to rotational duty coming off reconstructive knee surgery and the fact that Peters was playing at a surprisingly high level as a third round rookie.

And just in case you’re curious about the rest of the Falcons injury situation, or the Bears’ for that matter, here’s the complete report for both teams, filed Friday afternoon per league mandate.

Falcons WR White looks for big year

Posted: September 10
Updated: Today at 12:31 AM

Atlanta’s top target expects some more room with the addition of rookie Julio Jones.

ATLANTA — Falcons Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White is eager to see how opponents defend him now that Atlanta has added rookie wideout Julio Jones.

Atlanta wide receiver Roddy White is eager to see how opposing defenses will play against him now that Atlanta Falcons has added heralded rookie wideout Julio Jones.

AP PHOTO

Trying to cover tight end Tony Gonzalez, flanker Harry Douglas and rookie running back Jacquizz Rodgers might wear down the Chicago Bears if White matches his single-game career averages and Jones, the NFL’s No. 6 overall draft pick, lives up to his potential in Sunday’s season opener.

“We are confident,” White said Thursday, “but we know these guys aren’t called the Monsters of the Midway for nothing.”

Even though the Falcons’ passing attack has the ability to produce substantial numbers behind two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Ryan, White knows that Chicago offers a tough test.

Since 2004, the Bears have the NFL’s most takeaways (235), including 137 interceptions, and are led by a secondary that includes standouts Chris Harris at strong safety and Charles Tillman at cornerback.

Chicago added former Indianapolis starting cornerback Tim Jennings in free agency and hopes that Major Wright is ready to handle the responsibilities at free safety.

Harris, however, missed tackles on touchdowns scored by the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans in the preseason, so the Bears this week signed former Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather after his release from New England.

“There are always people around when someone catches the ball, so you’ve got to make some of those guys miss and break tackles,” White said. “We need some explosive plays against those guys because they keep everything in front of them. You won’t just throw balls over their heads and things like that.”

Jones’ development seems to be going well. Just as he did during the NFL lockout, Jones still meets nearly every day after practice with Ryan to watch film and study the playbook.

He is ready to show what he’s learned, but Jones likewise knows that nothing will come as easily as it did during his three years in the Southeastern Conference with Alabama.

“In the SEC, everybody competed and here they’re competing hard, too,” Jones said. “Here, I think it’s more so because it’s their job. That’s how they provide for their families.”

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff orchestrated a blockbuster trade with Cleveland on draft day, moving up 21 spots to pick Jones. The move was Atlanta’s acknowledgement that it was predictable and too easy to defend in the playoffs last season, this despite Pro Bowl seasons from Ryan, White, Gonzalez and running back Michael Turner.

White led the NFL with 115 catches and was second with 1,389 yards receiving in 2010. Those numbers set single-season franchise highs, but White knows they weren’t good enough to get him and the Falcons to the Super Bowl.

After earning the NFC’s No. 1 seed, Atlanta was blown out at home in the divisional round, losing to eventual champion Green Bay. The Falcons’ offensive weakness — tying for last in the league with only 44 plays of 20 yards or longer — was exposed.

The arrival of Jones is supposed to help stretch the field and give Ryan a speedy, deep option.

Jones will soon understand, however, that routes close much quicker in the NFL than they do in the SEC.

“At a receiver’s level, I think the only big difference is the windows are harder to catch the balls in,” Douglas said. “The windows are smaller. In the NFL, you have to catch a lot of balls with bodies on you. You’re not as wide-open as you are in college. They disguise coverages a lot better, too.”

White believes Jones has taken the right steps to succeed.

“When he first got here, he was kind of running routes short and stuff like that, but he’s just moving along now,” White said. “He’s rolling.”
